I’m interrupting my flow of Body Image Warrior Week guest posts – which, by the way, haven’t they been awesome so far? – to ask for your help, dear readers. I’m trying to raise money for the local chapter of Girls on the Run when I run the Big Sur International Marathon on April 29, 2012.
If you aren’t familiar with Girls on the Run, the organization’s volunteers coaches groups of girls over a 12-week period, which then culminates in a 5K race that all the girls take part in. Along the way they learn how to care for themselves and for each other, how to stand up for what they believe in and how to recognize their own power. It’s a pretty excellent organization and is totally deserving of our support, especially if you are like me and you are a woman who has found true empowerment through sports and physical activity.
The money will go to support Girls on the Run of Southern Tampa Bay. Any funds that I raise by running this marathon will be used to purchase medals, supplies for program sites and, if I raise enough, it will help to pay for scholarships for girls who cannot afford to pay the fees to join the organization.
And because I don’t expect you to give simply from the kindness of your hearts (although it would be cool if you did!) I’m offering a copy of a zine I am working on to anyone who donates $10 or more. The zine, tentatively entitled “Queens of the Road,” is about the early years of women’s distance running, including a history of women and endurance sports, the pioneers who helped shatter the asphalt ceiling and more. See? Now you totally want to donate, don’t you?
To make a donation, just click this link and then click on the link in the upper-right corner that says “Donate Now.” Once you make your donation, send me an email at saltonmyskin at gmail dot com, and I’ll put you on the list to receive a copy of the zine as soon as it’s finished.
